Black & White Collection Starter
There is a bird in Australia called the Bowerbird. It is a most fabulous creature as it likes to collect only things that are blue. It will weave those blue things, no matter what they are, into it’s magnificent ground nest that is like a woven throne.
I once lived near a bower bird while I was at art school. On my way to and from the train station, the path would wind through the bush (forest if you are in USA!) and past this wonderful nest. Now, if you have ever had anything stolen from your home or yard, it’s usually very confronting. However, seeing your blue clothes pegs (that you didn’t even know went missing) woven into that sculptural dedication to blue, somehow felt more like a somewhat cheeky form of play than the pure theft that it could be taken for!
This pattern recognition is something I adore, and I like to play my own versions of it, which has led me to a project I have been working on behind the scenes for a few years now. Seeing elements that are similar between various art objects is a joyous pass time of mine, and I have decided that now is the time to share these curated collections with the world.
Introducing: “Collector Starters”. Think of them like fire starters to ignite your collection! I’ve been gathering objects of a similar ilk (in my eyes) over the years and curated various styles for you to use as an inspirational starting point for your own collection. You can of course add them to an existing collection too!
I’d like to say that each week I will release one for sale, though I’ve learned after promising regular delivery of content these past years, that I’m wired to thrive on spontaneity, and will instead surprise you randomly with them:)
